The Five Crows Ledger: Biographic Warrior Art of the Flathead Indians by James D. Keyser,
Ledger Art derives from Plains Indian Biographic art. Because it recorded actual events important in the lives of individuals crow feathers and groups, Biographic art usually comprises naturalistic action scenes composed primarily of horses, humans, weapons, crow feathers and tipis. The earliest surviving expressions of Northern Plains ledger art were drawn in 1834 by the Mandan warriors Four Bears crow feathers and Yellow Feather (encouraged by George Catlin crow feathers and Karl Bodmer), but ledger art did not become commonplace on the Plains until after 1860. The earliest drawings remain relatively unknown: some have been lost, while a few still exist in various archives. One of these is the "Five Crows Ledger", a series of thirteen drawings collected, described, crow feathers and annotated by Fr. Pierre-Jean De Smet during his missionary work to the Flathead Indians of western Montana from 1841 to 1847. Deposited in a Jesuit archive for more than one hundred crow feathers and fifty years, it was rediscovered in the early 1990s. The first eleven drawings in the ledger were done by the Flathead chief Shil-che-lum-e-la (Five Crows), also known by his baptismal name, Ambrose; drawings twelve crow feathers and thirteen were likely done at a different time by a different artist. The Five Crows Ledger makes these important works widely available for the first time, crow feathers and includes significant evaluation crow feathers and interpretation by James Keyser. Complete with reproductions of all the "Five Crows" drawings crow feathers and a generous sample of other comparative Biographic art, this exquisite crow feathers and captivating book will be an invaluable resource for all those interested in Plains crow feathers and Plateau art.

Carrion Crow - The Carrion Crow, Corvus corone, can be distinguished from the Raven by its size (48–52 cm in length) and from the Hooded Crow by its black plumage, but there is frequent confusion between it and the Rook. The beak of the Crow is stouter and in consequence looks shorter, and whereas in the adult Rook the nostrils are bare, those of the Crow are covered at all ages with bristle-like feathers.

Torresian Crow - The Torresian Crow (Corvus orru), also occasionally called the Australian Crow, is about the same size (50-55 cm in length) as the Eurasian Carrion Crow but with a more robust bill and slightly longer legs. It has the typical white iris of the other Australasian Corvus species but can be distinguished from most (except the Little Crow) by the base of the head and neck feathers being snow white (revealed when blown by a strong wind).

New Caledonian Crow - The New Caledonian Crow (Corvus moneduloides) is a moderately sized crow (40 cm in length) similar in size to the House Crow but less slender looking. The bird is all black with a rich gloss to the feathers of purple, dark blue and some green in good light.

Cape Crow - The Cape Crow or Black Crow (Corvus capensis) is slightly larger (48-50 cm in length) than the Carrion Crow and is completely black with a slight gloss of purple in the feathers. It has proportionately longer legs, wings and tail too and has a much longer, slimmer bill that seems to be designed for probing into the ground for invertebrates.
