Litel Enfaunt That Were But Late Borne: The Image of the Infant in Medieval Culture in North Western Europe by S. Oosterwijk,
Early infancy remains probably the least-known stage of medieval life, despite four decades of debate on the history of childhood. High infant mortality rates in the past - although accurate demographic data for the Middle Ages are lacking - have persuaded some scholars that parents regarded infants as potentially short-lived creatures whose demise was met with resignation or even indifference. An image in medieval art that has also often been interpreted is that of the infant as a swaddled cocoon. However, this study provides a more nuanced imagery of early infancy in medieval culture. Contemporary authors were interested in infants not just from a medical or moralistic view-point, but also as an innocent being whose death could be truly tragic. The biblical story of the Massacre of the Innocents inspired artists, authors stage of infancy and playwrights alike, as a horrifying drama of great emotional impact. When the danse macabre emerged as a literary stage of infancy and visual theme, it included the newborn child amongst Death's archetypal victims. This link between the infant stage of infancy and death in two such popular themes in medieval culture presupposes that infant mortality was regarded not with indifference but rather as profoundly moving. Yet there was also an ambivalent attitude towards the infant, who was considered weak stage of infancy and immature as well as innocent. In fact, the age of heavenly perfection to be adopted by all mankind at the Resurrection was generally believed to be that of the adult Christ; children are rarely to be found in depictions of the Last Judgement. Nonetheless, the introduction of a limbo puerorum suggests not only a desire for a more merciful fate for unbaptized infants but also that they were envisagedas children, not as would-be adults. A late-sixteenth-century miniature by Joris Hoefnagel illustrates this continuing ambivalence of the infant in an allegory on life stage of infancy and death; as such, it serves as a starting point for this study on medieval infancy.
